“Junkitechture” Merges Green Design with Radical Creativity

What is “Junkitechture?” It’s exactly what it sounds like. Using only reclaimed or recycled materials , this new form of design is catching on around the globe as the green movement expands. In fact, the concept has grown into an entirely new category of architecture called “junkitechture.” Take the Oikos Project , the first UK theater made of all used materials, from junked stage sets to a wall made from watercooler bottles decorated by local schools. The two designers, Folke Kobberling and Martin Kaltwasser, improvise as they go based on the materials that are around that day, which makes the process just as important and invigorating as the final product. Yet the building of course meets all safety requirements to hold its capacity of 120 people. The new

theater will stand for two months to house two theater productions (one dealing with climate change, the other with alternate green societies). Afterwards, it will be deconstructed back to its bare bones, which can be used for other similar projects on large and small scales . This concept aligns perfectly with the designers’ philosophy. In their words: “This project reverses the normal processes of our economy. Here we are turning waste into functional products. We take something worthless and make something of worth out of it.” Something of worth—and interesting design.
