“Junkitechture” Merges Green Design with Radical Creativity

What is “Junkitechture?” It’s exactly what it sounds like. Using only reclaimed or recycled materials , this new form of design is catching on around the globe as the green movement expands. In fact, the concept has grown into an entirely new category of architecture called “junkitechture.” Take the Oikos Project , the first UK theater made of all used materials, from junked stage sets to a wall made from watercooler bottles decorated by local schools. The two designers, Folke Kobberling and Martin Kaltwasser, improvise as they go based on the materials that are around that day, which makes the process just as important and invigorating as the final product. Yet the building of course meets all safety requirements to hold its capacity of 120 people. The new theater will stand for two months to house two theater productions (one dealing with climate change, the other with alternate green societies). Afterwards, it will be deconstructed back to its bare bones, which can be used for other similar projects on large and small scales . This concept aligns perfectly with the designers’ philosophy. In their words: “This project reverses the normal processes of our economy. Here we are turning waste into functional products. We take something worthless and make something of worth out of it.” Something of worth—and interesting design. Football season kicks off this weekend with a slew of college games and on Sept 9th the NFL gets back on the field. It goes without saying we’re football fans and earlier this year we showed you how to prep for a Superbowl party . Why not start the season right with a tip-off party . We’ve pulled some of our favorite tips to get the party started! Audio and Video – It’s all about the game. Maybe the season opener is an excuse to throw a party but the game still needs to be on and the audio in working order. If you’re on a 13″ tube you should not be throwing a tip-ff party as your guests will be solely disappointed. Now’s the time to invite friends over to show off your 52″ plasma and 7.1 home theater system. Watching football in high-definition changes the game and even casual fans will be entranced by the action on the field. Keep other audio distractions such as music off during the game.

To get that piping hot cup of tea, Sauvage quite brilliantly equips the kettle with a lightbulb. The kettle can heat water at a temperature of 85 / 90° which is ideal for tea and the incandescent light bulb 100W along with the water, makes for a riveting design imagery. I share about 600 square feet and very little storage with my boyfriend. It’s no wonder that I am on a constant quest for squeezing the most out of our small space. This Old House did a great revamp of 1,500 square feet of space in Brooklyn (that occupies three kids) and offered these tips. 1. Install flooring, whether it’s wood or tile, in a diagonal pattern to help make rooms appear wider than they are. 2. Astonishing Campus Event Arena Built Out Of Beer Boxes

This unusual pavilion is called BOXEL and was designed by the students from the University of Applied Sciences in Detmold , Germany. Henri Schweynoch, together with his architecture team won a local competition with this project which is soon to house college concerts, presentations and other type of events. The surprising thing about this small arena is the fact that it is not built using common materials, but it consists of beer boxes. That’s right, in order to host campus events, 2000 beer boxes were temporarily “sacrificed” and were given a fun shape and a new meaning. We think the overall geometry of this pavilion is original and surprising.
