Husky 3000 PSI Gas Pressure Washer This summer I purchased the Husky 3000 PSI, 2.5 GPM, Axial Cam Pump, Pressure Washer to use around my house for cleaning our decks, porches, railings and miscellaneous yard care. I purchased the pressure washer from The Home Depot for $399. Husky Pressure Washer Features According to the manufacturer this gas powered pressure washer offers the following features: Honda GCV190 187cc OHC engine Maintenance free brass axial cam pump Custom trigger gun with soft-touch overmold On-board nozzle, gun, wand, and detergent storage Product Review I’ve used lots of pressure washers over the years from simple electric pressure washers to large commercial gas powered washers. I wanted to purchase a pressure washer that could tackle large and small jobs around our house. That’s why I purchased a gas powered model. My only requirements were to find a gas powered model under $500 with good reviews. After reading many different pressure washer reviews I ended up buying the Husky Model HU80432. I’ve been VERY pleased with this gas powered pressure washer. One of the biggest reasons I chose this pressure washer was the motor. This pressure washer comes with a Honda motor and my experience with Honda motors has been nothing short of amazing. Honda makes incredible small engines that last forever and run really well. Ease of Operation The Husky Pressure Washer is really easy to use. The Honda motor starts with one easy pull every single time! In assembly directions were easy to follow and it only took about 15 minutes to set up. The operating manual is also easy to understand and it’s a breeze to operate the pressure washer. Power The Husky pressure washers offers plenty of power. As you can see in the photos above this pressure washer had no problem stripping away a thick layer of mold and grime from our deck. Our deck is on the north side of the house and it gets a really nasty layer of mold on it each year. The pressure washer also has no trouble cleaning mold and grime from our vinyl railings and siding. Best of all the selection of nozzle tips makes it easy to get a spray pattern that’s strong enough for the application without damaging the substrate. Overall Impression I’m very pleased with this gas powered pressure washer. The only thing I’d change is a longer hose. I’m sure I can purchase a longer one and I just may do that in the future. Other than that I’m very pleased with this purchase and recommend the Husky Pressure Washer to anyone that wants a quality gas powered pressure washer to use around their home. Where To Buy Husky 3000 PSI Gas Powered Pressure Washer If you’re interested in buying the Husky 3000 PSI, 2.5 GPM, Axial Cam Pump, Pressure Washer then it’s sold exclusively at The Home Depot where you can buy it from $399.00.
Multi-Tools Today it seems that every manufacturer is offering some sort of Multi-Tool for the professional and DIY’er. Multi-Tools are great for cutting, sanding, scraping, grinding and polishing especially in tight spots where other large power tools won’t fit. If you’re interested I’ve written reviews for two of these tools: Rockwell Sonicrafter Review and Craftsman NEXTEC Multi-Tool Review . These are great tools and they work really well as long as you’ve got the right blade or accessory for the job. The problem is every manufacturer seems to have a different “special” blade for their tool so this article will help you find the correct blades to buy for your multi-tool.
WeatherShield – The Smarter Treated Wood Today I noticed a new product at The Home Depot , WeatherShield Premium Pressure-Treated Decking . What caught my eye was the warranty for this new type of pressure treated wood. WeatherShield offers a limited lifetime warranty which is guranteed protection against rot, decay and termite damage. If these claims are accurate this is a huge development within the treated lumber market. The original versions of pressure treated lumber have been good, but 20 years is really about the maximum you can expect to see before problems arise. The manufacturer boasts the following: Enhanced Durability – Pretreated with a wood stabilizer to reduce splitting, cracking, warping and swelling. Improved Weather Protection – Factory applied water repellent requires no additional sealing for one full year. New Lighter Color – Cleaner and brighter for a more natural appearance and improved stainability. Building Code Compliant – Less corrosive to screws, nails, hardware and aluminum products. SCS Certified – Environmentally Preferred Treated Wood Products Currently this version of the product is being sold by The Home Depot exclusively. I have a feeling we’ll be seeing more of this product on the market very soon. Have you used it yet? I’d love to hear some feedback on it.
DIY Replacement Windows This weekend I helped my dad install some new replacement windows. Installing replacement windows isn’t really that hard and it’s certainly a great DIY project for anyone with moderate DIY and construction skills. We replaced five double hung windows in about six hours. Ordering Replacement Windows Installing replacement windows is an excellent way to upgrade your home and make it more energy efficient and better looking. Replacement windows are designed to be installed inside your existing windows frame. This eliminates the need for costly siding repairs and also makes it a rather simple and quick project. How To Measure Replacement Windows Ordering the replacement windows is fairly straight forward if you know what dimensions you’ll need. You need to measure the height and width of the existing window opening. Step 1 – Measure Width : First you need to measure the width of the window. See Figure 1 which shows how to measure the width of the unit between the left and right jambs. If your house had replacement windows previously then it’s likely you’ll have a plastic or aluminum jamb liner where the parting stop and jamb are shown in the photo above. Later in the article I’ll show a photo of a that jamb liner. I bring this up because the jamb liner is typically about 3/8 to 1/2 inch thick and you need to base your width on the fact that the jamb liner will be removed. Once you’ve measured the width shown above you’ll want to order the replacement window approximately 1/4 inch narrower (each manufacturer actually recommends how much narrower to use). Step 2 – Measure Height : Next you need to measure the height of the replacement window. Most (but not all) existing windows will have a sloped sill. This is important to note because you want to be sure to measure the “least” opening which occurs at the top of the sill. See Figure 2 for a sketch on how to measure the height. Again you’ll want to take the vertical measurement and subtract about 1/4 inch for the height you’ll order. Be sure to check with the window manufacturer on the recommended size tolerance to use. Step 3 – Unit Depth : The last dimension you need to check is the distance between the outside blind stop and the inside stops. Most older windows were built with a dimension of 3-1/4 inches to 3-1/2 inches. In order for standard replacement windows to fit you need a minimum distance of 3-1/4 inches (see figure 3). Ordering Replacement Windows Once you’ve got all the window measurements you just need to place your order. Today’s replacement windows offer lots of options and features. The following is a short list of options and features that replacement windows come in. Material – Today you can order wood, vinyl, fiberglass, and aluminum clad wood (there may be other options as well ). A vast majority of todays replacement window market features vinyl windows. For our project we used Harvey’s Tribute Vinyl Window . Glazing – Today’s window manufacturers offer more glazing options than I care to cover in this article. You can choose from single pane, double pane and triple pane windows. You can also choose from Low-E/Argon filled glass to Low-E/Krypton filled glass. You can also order glass with UV protection to protect your furnishings from the suns damaging rays (I wish we had this in our home as our Brazilian Cherry Floors Darkened from UV light ). Screens – Screen options are plentiful with most manufacturers including full screens, half screens, aluminum, fiberglass and many companies are now offering “see through” screens which almost appear invisible when you look through the window. Benefits of Replacement Windows Installing replacement windows will improveme the energy efficiency of your home. One of the best reasons to install replacement windows right now are the Federal Tax Credits / Home Improvement Stimulus . Right now you can get a 30% tax refund up to $1500 for windows that qualify under the Stimulus Bill. With the rising cost of energy it’s fairly easy to see the cost benefit of new energy efficient windows. Your home will be easier to cool, easier to heat and much more comfortable. Be sure to come back and read my post on how to install replacment windows in the coming days.
New House Plan Considerations Seeing that I have recently finished building our new home I thought I’d share some insights into the design of a new home. There are many new house plans available today and the sky’s the limit on features and styles. The biggest problem with the design process is once we’ve decided that we’d like to build a new home human nature kicks in and we want it to happen over night. The problem with that is we typically don’t spend enough time evaluating and considering the design aspects of the new house. The most important thing to remember is spending extra time in the beginning will prevent you from having second thoughts once the house is done. The following list are ten important things to consider when choosing a new house plan. Top 10 New House Plan Considerations House Style – I think the style of the home is the best place to start. The style of the home will connect with so many of the choices you make so its important to spend some quality time thinking about the style you’d like to live in. Are your preferences more modern or traditional? Do you want a house that is similar to your neighbors? What house style will hold the best value in your neighborhood? What style house will closely match your interior style and existing furnishings? These are all questions that you need to ask yourself and your family. This was a tough question for my wife and I as we grew up on two sides of the country and our styles are very different. Number of Bedrooms – This question may seem simple and easy to answer but it is worth thinking about and discussing. The easiest answer to this question would be based on your current family size and needs. You may need a two bedroom today and need a four bedroom down the road when your family grows. Or maybe you need four bedrooms today yet your kids will be off to college in a few years. Single Level Vs. Multiple Levels – Whether or not your new house has only one level or more is really a personal decision. Some people really enjoy having single level living with no stairs to climb up and down. Some people prefer the more traditional cape and colonial home styles with bedrooms on the second floor. Some land sites are quite small and someone looking for decent square footage may only be able to build a multi-level house. If you think you may retire and live in your house as you get older the single level house may appeal to you. Master Bedroom Suite – Today’s new house plans typically offer a master bedroom suite. These suites often have generous closet space, large private bathrooms with soaker tubs, jetted tubs, large walk-in showers and even walk-in closets. These suites generally increase the value of the home and make the house more marketable if you sell in the future. Bonus Rooms (Laundry, Play) – One of the most popular trends in todays house plans are dedicated laundry rooms and the renewed popularity of pantries. In fact, in my new house we made the mudroom a combination laundry and pantry. Some house plans offer laundry on the second floor of multi-level houses. A word of caution if you choose a second floor laundry. Make sure you insist that some type of extensive drain system be installed in the unfortunate case there is a broken washing machine hose. Number of Bathrooms – The average number bathrooms in new houses has steadily increased over the years. The average home in the US has 2 1/2 baths and the average appears to be heading towards 3. Kitchen Style/Design – I could write an entire article on this topic, however, the main point here is that many house plans have just a basic kitchen layout. My suggestion is find a house you like and then modify the kitchen to your liking. Plenty of home supply stores will design you a new kitchen free of charge based on the floor plan so don’t let a simple kitchen layout deter you from a house plan you really like. Floor Plans – When evaluating floor plans try to visualize how you will furnish the house and how you plan on using different rooms in your daily life. Get a tape measure and measure rooms in your current house to get an idea of how big a 12′x15′ room really is. Often people have a hard time visualizing the size of a room and later when the house is done they are not happy with the size. I really suggest spending time on the evaluation. Functionality – The functionality of the new house plan is really one of the most important aspects for your long term comfort and use of the house. If you put the dining room on the other side of the living room so that you have to carry meals through the living room you will soon realize that’s not very functional. The same is true about the proximity of bathrooms to bedrooms. Again, I think its important to compare where you currently live to the house plan and think about your likes and dislikes. House Site – The house site can sometimes play a big part in the style, floor plan and functionality. For instance, if you have a very small site you may need two floors. Or maybe your lot is really hilly and needs a drive under garage. Just make sure that when you pick a couple of plans you evaluate them based on the lot as well.
Master Lock Window Bar The folks at Master Lock sent me the new Window Bar to test and review. Every year countless homes are broken into causing fear, damage and loss of property. Most entries into homes are through sliding doors and windows. With this new “window bar” alarm you can secure those sliding doors and windows for a reasonable price. Manufacturers Information The Master Lock ?Window Bar? provides easy, affordable all year round protection for your home. The ?Window Bar? is an adjustable security device that installs in seconds and locks to resist forced entry. It fits most standard windows and sliding doors by easily expanding from 22? to 36?. It has a loud, built-in pressure activated 110 decibel alarm that deters burglars and notifies occupants of a forced entry attempt. There?s also an added visual deterrent with the word ?Alarm? prominently printed right on the bar. The Window Bar is battery operated and the long-life battery is included. ?Experts agree that keeping windows and doors locked and adding levels of security are among the most important deterrents to burglars and the affordable, easy to use Master Lock Window Bar provides an additional and effective level of security on the smallest of budgets,? said Rebecca Smith, VP of Marketing. ?Whether you are traveling far from home or even in your home sleeping, the Master Lock Window Bar provides another level of protection and peace of mind from would be intruders.? Simple, Easy To Use Product The Master Lock Window Bar is really easy to install and use. First you install a 23A 12 Volt battery in the battery compartment. Then you rotate the shaft and expend or collapse the adjustable pole to fit the door or window. Then you rotate the shaft again to lock it in place. That’s all there is to arming the Master Lock Window Bar alarm. To test the alarm I installed the Window Bar in one of our double hung windows (see picture at top). I unlocked our window and went outside and “lifted” the window slightly to open it. The alarm sounded immediately and it’s VERY loud! Furthermore the big red letters on the side of the Window Bar clearly identify the object as an Alarm! The Master Lock Window Bar certainly performs as advertised. It’s an inexpensive (MSRP $28.38) product that allows you to quickly and easily alarm most sliding doors, sliding windows or double hung windows. Likely Uses I think this alarm is best used on sliding doors or windows that are close to the ground where an intruder might be able to easily climb into the window. This product would be very good for basement doors or doors in the back of the house where an intruder might try and enter without being seen.
Living Room Renaissance A Guest Post by Will Flanagan from CSN Stores . Based on spending analysis across a variety of home categories and sites, including CSNStores.com, LivingRoomsDirect.com and many more, trend spotters have signaled ?living room revivals? as the hot new makeover for ?09. Celebrity TV designer Angelo Surmelis commented on this phenomena, saying that ?the way you feel in your living room is linked to the way you feel in your life,? and if the living room is drab, dull and depressing, the entire mood and outlook of the household can suffer. It?s also been reported that living rooms have been taking a back seat to rooms requiring more focused makeovers, i.e. the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom, and were really becoming the ?forgotten room? of the home. What?s worse is that, in the past two years, living rooms were being made to feel smaller by recently added functions. A CSN Stores / Harris Interactive Survey conducted this April revealed that some living rooms were becoming both the place to lounge and the place to exercise or work. As changes in lifestyle called for additional furniture and space, families were incorporating new ?functions? into the living room, even if that meant putting the new laptop cart or treadmill next to the couch. However, in the past months, the call and need for a nationwide living room renaissance has been heard. Alex Wilczek, an online retail specialist, notes that ?living room accents have been very popular in mid-2009, as people are trying to add more appeal to their decor inexpensively.? Also, Surmelis just launched one of the first design-oriented lines of affordable living room furniture ? angelo:HOME. And on top of that, a coast-to-coast search for recession-weary living rooms in the most need for resuscitation was just launched ? the CSN Stores? Living Room Search and Rescue. The grand prize features a Room Rescue Package worth north of $5,000 and all that enter are awarded 10% off their next purchase. To enter, people just need to log onto the contest page and write ?how the recession has affected their living room and why it should be saved by Angelo.? If anything, the contest hopes to raise ?living room awareness? and remind people that this particular room is essential to a home?s well being, appearance, and feel. All these developments point to a mini renaissance in the living room, with this ?Heart of the Home? finally getting the attention it deserves. ———- Will Flanagan is a trend-spotter for CSN Stores , a top three online retailer of home and office goods. He helped spearhead the Living Room Search and Rescue , a coast-to-coast search for the most recession-weary living rooms in the country. Check it out at the link above.
