Inspiring small apartments are extremely valuable in a global society with increasing lack of space in large urban areas. If you too have a small apartment and think that it seems to be less space every day, think about how it would be to live in a 450 square foot studio apartment like the one found on Monkeyzen . Versatility and compactness are the two words that describe this miniature apartment. Thanks to an ingenious space arrangement, the apartment has everything you need: living room, kitchen, breakfast nook, bathroom, pull-out work space, a closet, bookshelves, lighting, a sofa bed and an extra bed for guests. The inhabitant, Eric Schneider, is happy to have his own small Upper West Side studio apartment, after living for a year in one half as size in Japan. Designed by Normal Projects , the Unfolding Apartment is described by its creators as “ Bigger than furniture; smaller than architecture “. A large blue custom-made cabinet contains much of the fold-down and pull-out furniture of the apartment. The architects, friends of Eric’s, needed to comply with one major request: a Murphy bed, which they cleverly incorporated in the cabinetry piece. With Eric having friends over twice a week, he needed a space that would encompass an entertaining and comfortable lifestyle. His love for cooking was the reason for a well-planned kitchen, featuring a large counter that doubles as a dining table for three. Surprising Apartment Design in Paris: Le Loft des Innocents

Le Loft des Innocents is an inspiring and amazing looking apartment in Paris, redesigned by Frédéric Flanquart after an accidental fire had destroyed parts of its former interior. Here is an excerpt from the designer’s description: “ The outlook of this area turned really fast into a crazy challenge: design and achieve a shell-free space with – as reference marks- only half-burned out staircases -leading to the lower level-, a huge scaffolding structure used as a roof, and a 360° view over Paris. The client wanted something new, ambitious and creative, in order to turn over a new leaf after 10 years spent at the loft. We came up pretty quickly with the idea of a quiet and relaxing place during the day switching to a genuine place of mystery and pleasure at night. Straight or slanting, geometrically random at times, the work of lines highlights every detail. The loft, a filled with emotions project, combines complexity, simplicity and lightness .” We really love the effect the wooden beams have on the overall appearance of the apartment. Does that mean our homes will become colourless caves, mere machines for living? On the contrary, a simpler approach can actually open up options for individuality and creativity. How to start? Try sourcing product from thrift shops, garages sales and online buy and sell sites like Kijiji www.kijiji.ca This an easy and fun way to shop locally for everything from art to furniture to collectibles, much of which you can customize to create a high-end signature look — with a bare-bones budget. If you need to declutter, Kijiji is also a quick and convenient way to get rid of items you no longer want. Use it, as well, to educate yourself about collectibles, as I did after recently scoring two highly unusual glass Rembrandt lamps. If you’re selling collectibles, it’s also provides a reliable pricing guide for similar items. Recycled décor can be a short-cut to one-of-kind style, but there are times when new is preferable. Newer-generation appliances are more energy and water-efficient, while it’s also often easier to get replacement parts for fixtures, a fact that will help extend product life. Instead, introduce the colour you love it in small amounts — as a headboard or even a broad swath on a wall, “says Lindsay. How right she was. I stuck with my original colour choices; but used them as accents and focal points on a backdrop of PP’s Jute, which is my fave new “neutral”. And how does it look? Simple, stylish and sustainable, if I do so say so myself! “Spectacular” is a good way to describe this apartment’s display of light and shapes. The interior design created by Hofman Dujardin is perhaps one of the most serene places in terms of light and accents. Covering 140 square meters, the plan is displayed in a spacious manner, with the entertaining room, dining space and kitchen creating a rectangular central space and large windows flanking each end. A spectacular Dear Ingo chandelier by Ron Gilad for moooi is displayed over the kitchen island, creating a hybrid space combining an abstract form with functionality. The recently renovated apartment displays a modern white staircase leading up to the second floor. Here we find a different design style that accentuates the shape of the female body and uses elegant shapes to further deepen the idea of modern elegance. The second floor is home to the two bedrooms, the bathroom and the toilet. An elegant staircase in the main bedroom takes you up to the rooftop terrace for some fresh air.
